10 Alternative Uses for Coffee You Didn’t Know
After drinking a good cup of coffee, many people usually discard the leftovers of this product. However, as happens with many other things, the ground beans can have other uses after being consumed. Therefore, knowing how to reuse it is an excellent idea that can help preserve the planet and even save some money. Below we present 10 ways to reuse coffee, all of them very easy to implement.
1. Avoid Bad Odors
Placing a little coffee in a glass and putting it in the fridge can be very helpful so that it does not retain bad odors. Likewise, if our hands have an unpleasant smell, just rub a little coffee on them and then rinse with warm water. This way, the odor disappears.
2. Skin Exfoliant
Thanks to its texture and caffeine, ground coffee beans are very good for exfoliating the skin and reducing cellulite. For the latter, it is highly recommended to mix the coffee leftovers with a little coconut oil and then rub it in circular motions all over the skin. To exfoliate, do something very similar: mix the coffee with half a tablespoon of olive oil and rub it on the skin for a few minutes. At the end, just rinse.
3. Make Compost
Coffee is perfect for preparing compost. It can also be used on plants that need acidic soil, as it provides a good amount of elements such as copper, potassium, magnesium and phosphorus. Similarly, mixing ground coffee with carrot and radish seeds is very helpful for these foods.
4. Adds Shine to Hair
We can reuse coffee to have much shinier hair. This is achieved with a coffee and water solution, just as we make a cup of this drink, which should be cold or at least at room temperature. The solution is used after washing the hair, leaving it to rest for about twenty minutes. Finally, rinse.
5. Animal and Insect Repellent
Coffee is an effective repellent for ants and some animals, mainly cats. For ants, just spread the dry ground coffee in places where these insects are found. In the case of cats, it is best to mix coffee with lemon and orange peels. This smell is not to the liking of these animals, so it keeps them away. Also, rubbing a little wet coffee helps our pets against fleas.
6. Cleaner
Because it is abrasive and acidic, coffee is used by many people as a surface cleaner, especially in the kitchen. To do this, just mix ground coffee with a little soap and water and apply it to the places we want to clean.
7. Air Freshener
In addition to avoiding bad odors, coffee also works as an air freshener because its aroma is usually strong, penetrating and pleasant. In this case, we should place the ground coffee inside a porous fiber or fabric that allows the coffee smell to spread throughout the place. Additionally, you can add some aromatic oil or fruit peels.
8. Dust Inhibitor
Coffee can be used in places that accumulate ash or a lot of dust, as happens in fireplaces. It is important that the ground coffee is wet, otherwise it will not work. This is spread over the dust, making it easier to collect.
9. Keeps Furniture in Good Condition
Wooden furniture can be kept in good condition thanks to coffee. Just rub a cloth over the entire surface of the furniture to give it shine.
10. Cooking
Coffee leftovers are useful for preparing different desserts and cakes. They are also used as a substrate for growing mushrooms and fungi. As we saw earlier, coffee has properties that are very good for the soil in general and for growing certain plants.
