Benefits of apples for skin and health
Curiosities
Health
In various studies and research, scientists have demonstrated the anticancer and antioxidant properties of apples.
That apples are rich in vitamins is something we are already familiar with, but now a new quality is added: its anti-cancer function and therefore its possible usefulness for the prevention of this disease that so concerns us.
After studying the components and properties of the apple, researchers reached an important conclusion: the apple has an inhibitory function on cancer development, thanks to the presence, especially in the peel, of two phytochemical substances that act together (flavonoids and polyphenols).
Specialists also discovered that the fruit has great antioxidant properties due to its vitamin E content.
The results of the experiment were published in the journal Nature, and one of the project leaders, Professor Rui Hai Liu, explained how the combination of these substances gives this fruit its anti-cancer activity, and not the individual action of each.
In the laboratory, research is usually carried out on vegetables for the identification and isolation of phytochemicals with anticancer properties contained in them. Scientists are interested in isolating and defining the benefits of components such as vitamin C, vitamin E and beta carotene; among others.
Pill intake can be replaced by fresh fruit intake
Researchers have found that most of the antioxidant effects of apples come from the action of phytochemicals, while vitamin C is only responsible for a small part of that activity.
In various studies on the subject, it has been shown that eating 100 grams of fresh apple with skin provides the body with the same amount of antioxidants as eating 3 vitamin C pills of 500 milligrams each. Antioxidants are useful for preventing damage to cells and tissues caused by oxidation. According to specialist Liu, sufficient antioxidants can be obtained from foods (fruits and vegetables) without worrying about their toxicity, and it is better than taking pills.
His research is also aimed at proving the importance of phytochemicals for human health, since some of them contain known anti-allergenic properties, but there are also other phytochemicals that possess anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-proliferative properties.
Laboratory reports confirm their benefits
A group of American professionals and scientists treated colon cancer cells with apple extract and discovered that it inhibited the proliferation of cancer cells. Dividing the apple into skin and pulp, the results were that apple skin extract inhibited cancer by 43 percent and pulp by 29 percent.
In the case of liver cancer, skin extract inhibited cancer cells by 57 percent and pulp extract by 40 percent.
These results were received with optimism by the American Cancer Society, although they preferred to take these conclusions with caution. They consider it too early to say exactly which substances in apples provide this protection, stating that for now «the best way to reduce cancer risk is to eat enough fresh fruits and vegetables.»
